Happier Meditation (formerly Ten Percent Happier) is one of the most trusted meditation apps in the U.S. Launched in 2015, headquartered in Boston and co-created with journalist and author Dan Harris, it has served millions of users, won an Apple “Best Of” award, and was ranked the #1 app in The New York Times’ “How to Meditate” guide. Its library of 500+ guided meditations and courses from teachers such as Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg runs across native iOS and Android apps, Apple Watch, and the web.
In 2025 Diffco became its engineering partner: leading AI product discovery for the company’s next generation of products while keeping the current platform stable, secure, and cost-efficient.

Goals
Happier came to Diffco with two objectives that had to run in parallel.
1. Strategic
Explore where AI can create new value at the intersection of mindfulness and personal growth, and turn that exploration into a validated product direction rather than a stack of ideas.
2. Operational
Take over active development of a mature platform—Ruby on Rails backend, React web, and Swift/Kotlin mobile apps—with full continuity for the existing user base and no disruption to the business.

AI product discovery
Diffco worked directly with Happier’s leadership as a product and technology thinking partner: mapping AI use cases against the audience and business model, evaluating what today’s models can and cannot do reliably, prototyping candidate experiences, and framing the architecture and cost profile of each direction — so decisions were made on evidence.
Platform audit and documentation
A senior team reviewed the full codebase, architecture, and critical workflows, then documented environments, workflows, and decision history that had previously lived in people’s heads. Happier gained clarity and control over its own system within weeks.
Continuous engineering support
A flexible team of senior engineers maintained and evolved every layer of the platform — back end, native iOS and Android, web, and infrastructure — with monitoring, release management, and app-store submissions handled end to end.
